Who we are
Kwigira started with one person and his family welcoming a young mother into their home who was alone and needing help. From this, one mother became a few and then many, providing first support and then education, and then most importantly: community.
To the international world, Rwanda is known for two things: the 1994 genocide and the mountain gorillas. Even tourists who make the trek to the Northern Province to see the gorillas often don’t have the chance to really meet or experience Rwanda beyond this.
Kwigira began with a few girls, a few sewing machines, and a big dream: to shift the conversation around young mothers and their unique struggles in Rwanda, one girl at a time. Working alongside key community members for the past three years, Kwigira has been able to impact the lives of over 250 young mothers and their children, providing these young women the space, resources, and tools to realize their own strength and potential.
